Question 2 from Oprah's book club, Part III

Both Stiva and Karenin are pillars of Russian society, and shown to be very adept at their jobs and in working with people. Is this interesting to you—and if so in what ways? What do you learn about the Russian business/diplomatic world from Karenin and Stiva?

I think that my naive/idealistic self is still surprised by this. I was raised in a community that was grounded in Christian principles -- you were not seen as a success if you were unfaithful to your spouse. It did not matter if you had amassed a fortune or were the favorite teacher on the university campus; if you were cheating on your spouse you lost your credibility.

It was a big shock when I realized most of the world did not work that way. Reading AK makes me wonder if our American culture is going to fall to this point. There's still at least the concept of marriage being important in our culture. In AK it seems to have been totally abandoned other than the pretense.
